Understanding scales:
The word scale is derived from the Italian word scaleo, which means stepladder. Indeed, the fretted guitar neck resembles a ladder. So, we can think of our fingers climbing up or down that ladder to sound out various notes. These notes, when grouped together, form a scale.
The major scale is the principal scale (hence the term, major). The formula for the major scale is: 2-1/2, 3-1/2 (i.e., 2 whole steps followed by 1 half step and 3 whole steps followed by 1 half step). All other scales (minor, harmonic, jazz, melodic, etc.) are therefore derived from the major scale. Without the major scale, all other types of scales would cease to exist. This concept can be likened to a tree (and a tree, to a child, can be a type of ladder to climb on). All trees have one trunk and many branches. If the trunk (the major scale) were not to grow from the underground roots, the branches (all the other scales) would never sprout.
The underground roots are the ancient peoples that invented the musical scales, who are now dead.
Try this exercise: go to MedianMusic's scale maker.
Play the G major Caged Scale (second column from left side of page), followed by the A, B, D, and E minor scale form up toward the bridge end of the fret board. Notice that you are playing the same exact eight notes (including the octave) in each scale shape or form as you go up the fret board (toward the bridge). That's because each scale form consists of the same notes as the G major Caged Scale, they're just arranged in a different order. Learn your neck notes.
